Neighbourhood Network in Palliative Care by Suraksha Palliative Care Trust 

 

Palliative Care Community Awareness Programme was organized in association with MSM at Al-Fithra School, Sreebhoothapuram, on 15th May 2023.  Nearly 50 women members actively participated. 

Community Volunteer teams drawn from different wards of Sreemoolanagaram Grama Panchayath area were also formed for need based assessment of the patients with debilitating illnesses in their respective wards. 

It was also decided to schedule the visit of Suraksha palliative home care team as per emerging patient needs.  

The programme was led by Mr. Mujeeb Kuttamassery, Palliative Care Consultant, Suraksha Palliative Care Trust, Mr. K Radhakrishna Menon, National Vice President, National Association of Palliative Care for AYUSH and Integrative Medicine, Dr. Jaya Sree, Medical Officer, Ms. Anjali, Dietician and Ms.Sivia, palliative care nurse, Suraksha Palliative Care Centre.

It was also decided to organise its next programme on 17th May 2023 involving a larger audience.


Youth Empowerment for community participation in Palliative Care – 

Rajagirians show the way

 

As the curtain raiser to the forthcoming 2nd International Conference of National Association of Palliative Care for AYUSH and Integrative Medicine, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kochi, India, organized a two day National Workshop on Youth Empowerment in Palliative Care on 27th and 28th January 2023 at their Hill Campus, Kalamassery, Kochi, India.  Inauguration of Rajagiri Centre for Palliative Care Research and Action (RCPCRA), the newly formed Palliative Care Centre by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, gave an impetus and added value to the Workshop.

The formal inauguration of both the programmes was made by Ms. Gilly Burn, the legendary personality who was singularly responsible for introducing the palliative care philosophy to the Indian community way back in the 1980s. 

The function was presided over by Dr. Binoy Joseph, Principal, RCSS.  Dr. Fr. M K Joseph, HOD, Department of Social Science, welcomed the gathering.  Dr. Fr. Saju, M D, CMI, Associate Director & Vice Principal, RCSS and President, Rajagiri City Chapter, NAPCAIM, made the key note address.  

Dr. Piyush Gupta, National Secretary of NAPCAIM and Cancer Aid Society, and Vaidyaratnam Dr. Raghavan Ramankutty, Chairman, Suraksha Palliative Care Trust and President, Kanjoor City Chapter, NAPCAIM offered felicitations for the success of RCPCRA and the programme.  Dr. Kiran Thampi, Assistant Professor, RCSS, proposed vote of thanks.

The sessions were rendered by Ms. Gilly Burn, Dr. Piyush Gupta, Dr. Malarvizhi K Natarajan, Mr. K Radhakrishna Menon, Dr. K L Babu and Mr. Mujeeb Kuttamassery.

Dr. Piyush Gupta spoke on the advocacy programme by Cancer Aid Society under the LEAD PROJECT INDIA of IAHPC. 

Ms. Katherine Irene Pettus, PhD, Senior Advocacy and Partnerships Director, International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care shared her video message for the success of the Workshop.  

63 students from MSW of RCSS and external agencies actively participated in the deliberations. 

A core team was also formed to take this message forward and for the successful conduct of the forthcoming international conference.  RCSS will be hosting the conference. 

Participating Certificates were distributed to the delegates at the valedictory function held at the conclusion of the programme.  Ms. Isha Elizabeth coordinated the programme.


Ms. Gilly Burn, the legendary leader, who introduced Palliative Care to the Indian Community way back in the 1980s, was on a three-day goodwill visit to Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian Sea, from 29th to 31st October 2022.  Pallium India Trust, Trivandrum, coordinated her itinerary.



She also had a very vibrant session on the topic at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery on 31st October 2022 addressing the students of Social Work.  More than 140 students actively participated in the programme. 

The programme was ably coordinated by Fr. (Dr.) M K Joseph, CMI, HOD, Social Work and Sr. (Dr.) Sunirose. I.P., Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work.


Infinite potentials of Ayurvedic interventions in cure and care of persons with life limiting illnesses – New dimensions of hope in palliative care

Suraksha Palliative Care Centre takes up this challenging task

“Ayurveda, the soul of India’s indigenous medical system, will pave the way for integrating it with the palliative care delivery system”, Ms. Gilly Burn from UK, the legendary figure who introduced the philosophy of palliative care to India as per the directives of the World Health Organization way back in the 1980s, stated during her inaugural address of Suraksha Palliative Care Centre at Dathathreya Holistic Health Centre at Kanjoor, Kochi, Kerala, India.

Vaidyaratnam Dr. Raghavan Ramankutty, an expert clinician in allopathy and Ayurveda and chairman of Suraksha Palliative Care Trust, hoped that with the existing treatment options available in Ayurveda can bring back the lives of many thereby can reduce the burden of the existing palliative care delivery system.

Dr Piyush Gupta, National Secretary, NAPCAIM and Secretary, Cancer Aid Society, was the Chief Guest.

S/Shri K. Radhakrishna Menon, National Vice President, Mujeeb Kuttamassery, Secretary, Kerala State Chapter, NAPCAIM, Abhijith, Block Member, Smt Viji Saji, Ward Member, Mrs.Sarada Raghavan, Director, Dr. Prashanth Raghavan and Dr. Manju felicitated.

An appreciable number of the local community including members from the local self-government institutions and the patients who received the treatment participated in the programme and shared their experiences.

The Centre also started its operations with Outpatient facility and Home Care services.
